Abuse of Power

31 Oct 2006

power  And he wrote in the letter, saying, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck down and die.”  ~ 2 Samuel 11:15Pittacus wrote, “The measure of a man is what he does with power.” Second Samuel 11 tells the story of a king who forgot that leaders wield power for one reason only - to serve. Consider the “Path to Abusive Power” in leaders:

Stage One: Surprise - “I get this?”
Stage Two: Self-Esteem - “I need this.”
Stage Three: Satisfaction - “I deserve this.”
Stage Four: Selfishness - “I demand this.”

By watching King David weave a tangled web following his sin with Bathsheba, we notice five common abuses of power that still trip up leaders today. Calvin Miller describes them this way:

  1. Drifting away from those disciplines we still demand of our people.
  2. Believing that others owe us whatever use we can make of them.
  3. Attempting to fix things up rather than make things right.
  4. Refusing to accept that we could be blindly out of God’s will.
  5. Believing that people in our way are expendable.

STROKE: Remember The 1st Three Letters

31 Oct 2006

Stroke
STROKE IDENTIFICATION:During a BB Q, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid’s husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00pm, Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don’t die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this…

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke…totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKEThank God for the sense to remember the “3″ steps, STR . Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK .. to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. . . It is sunny out today)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
{NOTE: Another ’sign’ of a stroke is this: Ask the person to ’stick’ out their tongue… if the tongue is ‘crooked’, if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke} If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

Psalm 61 - For the director of music. With stringed instruments. Of David.

30 Oct 2006

lighthouse_02.jpg  I read this Psalm aloud this morning and felt very inspired and encouraged by God’s love and the strength that I can gain from Him alone. Makes me want to sing praises to Him more everyday :)   Dear Father in Heaven, I want to surrender my life, my body, and will to you. But I confess, there are little things (and maybe some big things), that I keep from ever placing on that altar. Things I don’t want to give up. To the best of my ability, I pledge today to live for you in a way that leaves nothing outside your Lordship and control. I offer you me all that I have and am to be yours today. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

When People Are Esteemed, Relationships Are Redeemed

30 Oct 2006

dandelion.jpg Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth . . . Wrath is cruel and anger a torrent, but who is able to stand before jealousy? Open rebuke is better than love carefully concealed. Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful . . . Like a bird that wanders from its nest is a man who wanders from his place. . . . Do not forsake your own friend or your father’s friend . . . As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend . . . The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, and a man is valued by what others say of him.  Proverbs 27:1, 4-6, 8, 17, 21

Leaders know that people are an organization’s most appreciable asset; therefore, people skills are a leader’s most important attribute. Proverbs 27 presents some fundamentals on relationships. It teaches that if people are esteemed, relationships are redeemed.

  1. Don’t brag.
  2. Don’t envy.
  3. Be forthright.
  4. Don’t forsake your roots.
  5. Stay close.
  6. Add value.
  7. Don’t be moved by flattery.

Beware of Cancerous Food & Products

29 Oct 2006

Cancer

SATAY LOVERS

If you all eat satay, don’t ever forget to eat the cucumber, because eating satay together with carbon after barbequing can cause cancer.

But we have a cure for that… Cucumber should be eaten after we eat the satay because satay has carsinogen (a cancer causing element) but cucumber is anti-carsinogenic.

So don’t forget to eat the cucumber the next time you have satays.

PRAWNS & VIT C

DO NOT eat shrimp/Prawn if you have just taken VITAMIN C pills!!

This will cause you to DIE in ARSENIC (As) toxication within HOURS!!

Brain Teaser

26 Oct 2006

Read out loud the text inside the triangle below.

More than likely you said, “A bird in the bush,” and……..
if this IS what YOU said, then you failed to see that the word THE is repeated twice!
Sorry, look again.Next, let’s play with some words.

What do you see?

In black you can read the word GOOD, in white the word EVIL (inside each black letter is a white letter). It’s all very physiological too, because it visualizes the concept that good can’t exist without evil (or the absence of good is evil).

Now, what do you see?

You may not see it at first, but the white spaces read the word optical, the blue landscape reads the word illusion. Look again! Can you see why this painting is called an optical illusion?

What do you see here?

This one is quite tricky! The word TEACH reflects as LEARN. Last one.

What do you see?

You probably read the word ME in brown, but……. when you look through ME you will see YOU! Do you need to look again?

Test Your Brain
This is really cool. The second one is amazing so please read all the way though.

ALZHEIMERS’ EYE TEST
Count every “F” in the following text: FINISHED FILES ARE THE RE
SULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTI
FIC STUDY COMBINED WITH
THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS…HOW MANY ?WRONG, THERE ARE 6 — no joke.
READ IT AGAIN !
Really, go back and try to find the 6 F’s before you scroll down.
The reasoning behind is further down. The brain cannot process “OF”.
Alzheimers_brainIncredible or what? Go back and look again!!

Anyone who sees all six the first time is a genious!

Three is normal, four is quite rare.

The Heart of Decision Making

25 Oct 2006

Eagle Decision The Heart of Decision Making - By John C. Maxwell

How many decisions will you have to make today? More importantly, how decisive will you be when making them? Will you be confident, or will you waiver? Will you know what needs to be done, or will you put off the decision?  Every day we are faced with issues related to our families, organizations, churches and friends. How do we know what’s right? The answer can be found in our values.

As followers of Christ, I’m sure most of us have thought about our values. But what about as businesspeople? Organizational values often are given in a mission statement. But, as Ken Blanchard says, “Lots of companies claim they have a set of core values, but what they mean is a list of generic business beliefs that everyone would agree with, such as having integrity, making a profit and responding to customers. Such values have meaning only when they are further defined in terms of how people actually behave and are rank-ordered to reveal priority.”

I cannot tell you what your values are, but I encourage you to reflect on what is most important to you and your organization. Your value statements should come from the heart, appeal to your best instincts, be unique to you and your organization, give clear direction and have staying power.

Roy Disney said, “It’s not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are.” Once you commit your value statements to writing, they will begin to provide a foundation from which you can make decisions. You can measure your growth and guide your actions by:

  1. Learning and articulating your organization’s values. Take time to develop a clear mission statement and learn it. Once you know the values that direct your organization, start articulating these values through your actions. We teach what we know; we reproduce what we are.
  2. Comparing values to practices. Your values should be reflected in your daily interactions with customers, team members and vendors. Don’t wait for a crisis before you start practicing your values. If your values and practices don’t match, change one or the other.
  3. Practicing the organization’s values as a team. Get your team involved. Look for ways your current projects can reflect or maintain the values of the organization. By sharing the value statements, your team will become more defined.
  4. Highlighting when values are being practiced. Look for opportunities to publicly recognize team members who live the values. Reward their commitment to following the vision and values of the organization.
  5. Making the organization’s values public and giving the team a reputation to uphold. It is easy to cheat on a diet if you don’t tell others that you are trying to eat more healthfully. But when you start telling people your goals, you become more committed to achieving them. Let people know what your organization stands for, and create a sense of responsibility.

Scott Peck says, “When we love something, it is of value to us, and when something is of value to us, we spend time with it, time enjoying it and taking care of it.” By taking time to list, learn and practice your values, you will be prepared to take on challenging decisions. Your values, whether personal or as defined by the group, act as a guide and make it easier to choose your way. If you know your values, most of your decisions have been thought through before you have to make them.

Dr. John C. Maxwell, known as America’s authority on leadership, speaks in person hundreds of thousands of people each year. He is the author of more than thirty books, including The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, which has sold more than a million copies.

Reform Begins Within

25 Oct 2006

Now it happened, when the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, that he tore his clothes. 2 Kings 22:11

Throughout his thirty-one years of godly leadership, King Josiah wholeheartedly followed the Lord and devoted himself to leading the people well. His own spiritual passion soon began to influence Judah and eventually brought about public reform.
Even today Josiah remains a vivid example of a key biblical principle: Outward reform begins with inward renewal. The leader must experience personal change before he or she can implement public change. Leaders make an impact the same way an atomic bomb does: They implode before they explode.

How did the young king “implode” before he “exploded”? After ten years on the throne, while he was still a teenager, Josiah sent several men to the high priest to re-energize the process of repairing the temple. While cleaning up the rubble, the high priest found “the Book of the Law.” Shaphan the scribe read it, then reported its contents to the young king. And how did Josiah respond? He imploded. He ripped his clothes. His tender heart and humility prompted him to embark on a national program of spiritual reform. The cycle worked this way for King Josiah:

Personal Renewal >>> Personal Change >>> Public Change Implemented >>> Public Reform
