Here’s a look at leadership skills development by John C Maxwell on Invest to Empower
Barnabas took [Paul] and brought him to the apostles, And he declared to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.
~Acts 9:27
Barnabas let no opportunity escape to add value to others, and his greatest single contribution in terms of empowerment can be seen in his interaction with Paul. Read the rest of this entry »

And Moses said: “By this you shall know that the Lord has sent me to do all these works, for I have not done them of my own will. If these men die naturally like all men, or if they are visited by the common fate of all men, then the Lord has not sent me. But if the Lord creates a new thing, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the pit, then you will understand that these men have rejected the Lord.” ~ Numbers 16:28-30
The Scripture makes clear that God places people in authority, and it is dangerous to oppose God’s anointed. Korah had rebelled against both Moses and the Lord, thusillustrating the tragic flaw of many leaders-a desire for power and authority beyond what God has ordained.

If you think the way successful people think and adopt their success habits, you too can be successful. Here are seven qualities of the top 1% of successful people.
1) They are Ambitious.
They see themselves capable of being the best. They see themselves with the capacity of being really good at what they do. This was a really big thought for me. It held me back for many years. When I saw people who were doing better than I was, I naturally assumed they were better than I was. Read the rest of this entry »

Abraham said to the oldest servant of his house . . . “Go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” ~Genesis 24:2, 4

Now David said on that day, “Whoever climbs up by way of the water shaft and defeats the Jebusites . . . he shall be chief and captain . . . ” Then David dwelt in the stronghold, and called it the City of David. ~2 Samuel 5:8-9
In this world of rapid change, the leader must be out in front to encourage change and growth and to show the way to bring it about. Read the rest of this entry »

Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare for battle? But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uninformed person comes in, he is convinced by all, he is convicted by all…For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.Let all things be done decently and in order. 1 Corinthians 14:1, 4, 8, 24, 33, 40
Paul wrote to bring order to a church in chaos. The Corinthians were abusing their gifts and calling attention to themselves rather than to Christ. As a leader, Paul had to change this. What can we learn about organization from this?

And see, now I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me. But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. ~ Acts 20:22-24
Who you are precedes what you do. As Paul spoke to the Ephesians, he described the ingredients of an effective leader. Paul made tough calls, yet shed tears in front of his people. One thing is sure: Leadership begins with the heart. Read the rest of this entry »

Then [Saul] waited seven days, according to the time set by Samuel. But Samuel did not come . . . So Saul . . . offered the burnt offering. Now it happened, as soon as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, that Samuel came . . . And Samuel said, “What have you done?” ~1 Samuel 13:8-11~
One of the most common obstacles to success is the desire to cut corners. But short cuts never pay off in the long run. If you find that you continually give in to your moods or impulses, then you need to change your approach to doing things. Read the rest of this entry »

“It’s more important to be unified than to be personally right“
I learned that a long time ago as a young Christian how crucial unity must be in the church. I confess I have at times fallen short of living it out as attitudes grew and my selfishness got the better part of me. As disciples we can see that for a team to work properly it must be unified with the leadership. How much more should we be unified with one another as disciples?

For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel. ~Ezra 7:10
Even at a young age, Ezra diligently studied and learned to become a scholar. He won the respect of many, including the political leader of the land of his exile, King Artaxerxes. He established his connections and influence over time-a necessary step if the dream of restoring Jerusalem were to be fulfilled.

Bill Gates is worth $56 billion. Warren Buffet commands $52 billion. Yet, if accounts of the ancient King Solomon are accurate, his riches would have dwarfed the wealth of today’s richest men, topping the modern-day equivalent of $1 trillion, or $1,000 billion! In The Richest Man Who Ever Lived, author Steven K. Scott looks into the writings King Solomon to find lessons from history’s wealthiest man. Here’s 10 Steps To Goal Getting by Zig Ziglar that I found very helpful for 2008
1. Make the commitment to reach your goal. “One person with a commitment is worth a hundred who only have an interest.” Mary Crowley.
2. Commit yourself to detailed accountability. Record your progress toward your goals every night, and list the six most important things you need to do the next day. Daily discipline is the key to reaching your goals. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s about attitude. You undoubtedly have met people in service positions who have poor attitudes toward servanthood. And just as you can sense when a worker doesn’t want to help people, you can just as easily detect whether a leader has a servant’s heart. Read the rest of this entry »
