Resetting the Default Browser to Internet Explorer / Firefox 2.xx for Windows XP SP1 and above

Resetting the Default Browser to Internet Explorer / Firefox for Windows XP SP1 and above had a problem today related to Firefox browser and wanted to change my internet browser back to Internet Explorer.. if you face the same problem, here’s a simple solution for this problem..

There is 2 ways you can set your Default Browser.

1. You can use the Set Program Access and Defaults feature to set your default browser.

To set Internet Explorer as the default (this repairs the file association settings as well), try this:

Click Start, Run and type control appwiz.cpl,,3

or

From Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Set Program Access and Defaults -> Custom.

Click the Custom button once. From the list that appears, select Internet Explorer and then click the OK button.

2. Change the settings in Internet Explorer itself..

a. Double-click the icon for Internet Explorer 7 on the desktop, or go to

Start -> Programs -> Internet Explorer.

b. Go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Programs tab.

Check the box titled: Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default browser.

c. Click on OK.

d. Close Internet Explorer and then start the program again. An Internet Explorer message should appear saying

“Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser?”

Uncheck the Always perform this check when starting Internet Explorer box, and click on Yes.
Internet Explorer is now your default browser or you can click on “Make Default” button.

Note: If the default browser message does not appear when you re-launch Internet Explorer, check to see if IE is already your default browser. If it is not your default browser and the message does not appear, restart your computer and launch Internet Explorer again.

Setting the Default Browser to Mozilla Firefox 2.0.12

a. Launch Firefox by double-clicking on the Firefox 2.x icon on your desktop or

by going to Start -> Programs -> Firefox 2.x
b. Go to the Tools menu -> System Defaults.
c. Select “Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup” and check it

d. Click on “Check Now” and a select “Yes” when the pop-up appear..

Resetting the Default Browser to Internet Explorer / Firefox for Windows XP SP1 and above

e. Click OK. Firefox is now your default web browser.
